What is an Internet Workgroup?

Internet Workgroup is the name we gave to a disruptive technology for the mature project management market. If you want to collaborate with a team then you need some sort of server to share data. Traditionally, these have been specialized collaboration platforms that require one or more servers to run.

However, what if nobody had to buy, maintain or even know about the server sharing the data-- but it could still be secure, reliable and scalable? It would be a great way to collaborate on a project. We use Amazon S3 Web Services to fulfill this need.

What makes it so great?

Because its available to anyone with an internet connection, you no longer need to worry about a server. This means no server URLs, special logins and passwords to forget, issues from outside firewalls, expensive hardware or server licenses to purchase, user accounts to manage, availability to worry about, etc...

Just name your project and share it!

So it's like storing a file on a server?

Yes. Only that server is not restricted to a corporate intranet, but is available to anyone in the world on the internet.

Is that safe?

We take all reasonable precautions to keep your data safe and secure. All communication between TeamDirection IntelliGantt and Amazon S3 is via HTTPS. Also, the data itself is encrypted with a 192-bit key.

Do I have to checkout and checkin my changes?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Unlike most solutions, TeamDirection merges everyone's changes together into one view of the project. All you need to do is press the update button when you want to send and receive changes.

Is there a master project somewhere?

Everyone has a copy of the project on their local computer. This lets you work offline-- even disconnected from the internet. When the time comes, you 'update' the project on the internet server and merge project changes into your local copy.

What if the project is removed from the Internet Workgroup?

Since everyone has their own copy of the project, the group just needs to decide who will republish it to the server-- most likely the project manager. No-one needs to rejoin or do anything extraordinary. Because everyone has a local copy of the project, everyone essentially has a backup of the project.

What if Amazon's servers go down?

We're confident that will rarely happen. But if it did, you can still continue working on your project and simply update when Amazon is running again.

How big are these project files?

We've found a 'simple' 1000 task project turns into about 75K or so of file data.

And all IntelliGantt products have Internet Workspace capability?

Yes. Both IntelliGantt and IntelliGantt Plus can publish to, subscribe to and synchronize with an Internet Workspace. The Microsoft Project Add In can publish to and synchronize with an Internet Workgroup, but not subscribe.

Working on it!
